The Seattle Audubon Society's Cats Indoors! Campaign
seeks to protect birds and other wildlife in the urban
environment by encouraging people to keep their cats indoors.
Seattle Audubon Society believes that predation by cats
is one of the main threats to birds and wildlife in urban
and suburban areas. By keeping their cats indoors, people
can protect local wildlife and help their cats lead longer,
healthier lives.
The Goals of the Cats Indoors! Campaign are to:
-
Heighten awareness of the benefits of
keeping cats indoors
-
Partner with like-minded organizations
-
Provide people with the tools necessary
to keep their cats indoors or convert their cats to
an indoor lifestyle.
Cat Facts:
Outdoor cats (both companion animals and strays) kill
millions of songbirds and small mammals per year in the
US.
-
Cats are not a natural part of ecosystems.
-
Cats compete with native predators.
-
Cats transmit disease to wildlife.
-
Well-fed cats still hunt and kill wildlife.
-
Bells do not prevent cats from killing
wildlife.
-
Interrupting an attack by a cat does
not allow the prey to escape and live.
